Definition: Adopting someone else’s viewpoint with thankfulness even at the expense of your own.

Clarifications: A child does not necessarily repent when conforming to the parent’s law, but rather when trusting in his parents’ viewpoint at the expense of his own. Adults repent when deciding to trust in God’s viewpoint at the expense of a personal belief or view

little boy story

After being punished for going into the street, the little boy will seethe and finally give in. But it’s a legalistic concession. He still thinks “I hate Mommy!” or at least, “Mommy’s mean!” So he might tiptoe around the issue: throwing rocks at passing cars, etc. Finally he goes out into the street chasing a ball. A truck nearly hits him. In terror he runs back into his yard. He needs mommy’s love. Suddenly he realizes:
she was right! So he goes inside and says, “Mommy, I love you!” (Not “Mommy, guess what just happened…”)

- Infantile male (paper thin paper) has to work alone, cannot work under authority but has to be in authority. Thankfulness makes repentance possible. Thankful heart is able to serve with no strings attached.
- Most theologians talk about obedience. God says…have to recognize you have received outside of yourself. I have received = thankfulness.
- I don’t deserve = repentance. Gratitude intimately tied to repentance.
- A: Raised liberal protestant - treated everyone the same with no depth. No one really cares about me (diffuse). Conservatives – may be good or not so good love, but don’t love outsider the way they do the insiders. (tribal – they will care about me if I do what they say.) - Interview2007-09-08
